Rain has final say in Under 17 thriller

Yesterday the 30th of June saw a high scoring thriller between MTSSC and Harrow CC. Unfortunately the weather had the final say in this match.

Harrow won the toss and decided to bat on a good batting track. Due to the dark clouds that were building up, the umpires decided on a 15 over game hoping that they could beat the rain. Harrow opened with Fateh Singh and Sachin Patel. Even though the first over only yielded 2 run, the 2 batsmen started hitting out from then on. They put on an opening stand of 131 runs with Sachin being out bowled for 53 in the 13th over. Sachin’s 53 runs came off 33 balls and included 6 boundaries and 2 sixes. Fateh was joined by Kamran Hussein and the 2 of them took the final score to 167 for 1 at the end of the 15th over. Fateh who was on 68 when the 1st and only wicket fell, went on to remain 100 not out. This was an amazing batting performance considering his 100 only came off 15 overs. His knock just came off 54 balls and contained 11 boundaries and 4 sixes. The second wicket partnership was worth 36 runs of which Fateh contributed 32. Kishan Patel was the only bowler with respectable figures of 3-0-22-1. The MTSSC fielding needs to improve with Fateh being given 4 lives in his innings. The MTSSC field setting could have also been better.

After a quick change over, Kishan Patel and Seerone Kandasamy walked out to the middle. It was a tall ask for MTSSC with an asking rate of over 11 runs per over. It was starting to drizzle at this point. The first over bowled by Zain went for 18 runs. The next bowled by Jack brought 17 but also the wicket of Kishan. MTSSC were now 35 for 1 off 2 overs. Kishan was caught on the boundary by (you guessed it) Fateh for 7. Rishi then joined Seerone and the 2 of them kept the innings going. At the end of the 6th over MTSSC were on 75 for 1 and were on track and actually ahead of the asking rate. Seerone was unbeaten on 44 which came off 22 balls and contained 4 boundaries and a six. Due to the steady drizzle and with safety in mind the umpires came off the pitch. A decision to abandon the game was made after approximately 10 to 15 minutes with the steady drizzle continuing.

It’s a pity that such a thrilling game had to be abandoned and also that the Middlesex Colts Association don’t use the Duckworth Lewis method to decide on a winner. If the Duckworth Lewis method was used the par score for MTSSC would have been 48 with MTSSC well above the required score. Oh! Well if only. So in the end both teams had to settle for a single point.
