Under 17’s lose to Ickenham

Last Friday (20th August 2014) the under 17’s played their second league game against Ickenham CC. Based on our performance at Eastcote, this should have been a walk in the park. However it was sad to learn that there were a few players who had pulled out at the last moment which led to MTSSC fielding not only an under strength team, but also a 10 man team. This was very sad as to me this team has been the best team produced by MTSSC (I hope some of the existing teams prove me wrong). So given that this team can become under 17 division 1 champions, it is sad and unfair on the other players when team mates pull out on the very last day. Being a previous manager myself I know how frustrating this would have been for the manager to find replacement players at such short notice. Sometimes I think parents tend to forget that the managers also have parental duties in addition to them volunteering to manager the cricket teams.

Saying all of this our skipper Sachin lost the toss again and Ickenham elected to bat. They opened with Tom Marshall and Jash Ghandhi. The absence of the 11th player was definitely felt as quite a few boundaries were scored in either the missing long off, long on or fine leg positions. At least 4 or 5 boundaries were scored where the 11th player would have been. I’m not sure if this also had an impact on the other players as our fielding was also not up to the usual standards. Tom Marshall was put down when he offered Hasib a simple chance. Saying this it must be stated that this was the 3rd match in 3 days for the under 15 boys and may have had a bearing. Nevertheless nothing must be taken away from the Ickenham openers who put on a 136 runs before Jash was run out by Rishi for 75. His knock comprised of 9 boundaries and 2 sixes. Tom Marshall remained unbeaten on 56 and Ickenham finished on 163 for the loss of 2 wickets. An imposing score of more than 8 runs per over. Rishi and Kishan were the pick of our bowlers. Rishi ended up with figures of 4-0-23-1 whilst Kishan ended with figures of 4-0-19-0 and was unfortunate not to have the wicket of Tom Marshall. I thought young Hishanth who kept wickets for the team did a good job.

We opened with Seerone and Rishi and batted very well to stay within the asking rate. They put on an opening stand of 50 runs before Seerone was out bowled by Tom. Seerone was the more aggressive batsman and scored 40 out of the 50 runs. His knock of 40 runs came off 33 balls and contained 5 boundaries and 2 sixes. At the end of the 7th over we were 56 for 1 and within the asking rate. Rishi was then joined by Kishan and the 2 of them took the score to 75 before Kishan was unfortunately out, bowled off an inside edge. He was out for 19 but once again we were in the game as at the end of the 10th over we were 75 for the loss of 2 wickets. Rishi who was batting well was then joined by Sachin and they took the score to 92 in the 13th over before Sachin was out. Hasib joined Rishi and this pair took the score to 109 before Rishi was out bowled by a leg stump Yorker. It was a shame that Rishi got out at this point as he was batting well and had just hit a splendid six straight down the ground that hit the sight screen. He scored 30 runs off 28 balls which contained 4 boundaries and 1 six. We were now 109 for 4 in the 14th over. However none of the other batsmen got going and we lost our 9th and final wicket with the score on 126. Ickenham had won the match by 37 runs.
