Sidhu leads MTSSC to an emphatic win
Saturday 27th July, 2013
Second XI Fixture – Division 1(Middlesex Championship)
Middlesex Tamil Sports & Social Club V Birkbeck College Cricket Club at the MTSSC Grounds
MTSSC began their recovery mission with a convincing victory by beating Birkbeck College CC by 112 runs on Saturday afternoon. Birkbeck College won the toss and put MTTSC to bat on a green wicket but an all-round performance by the home side saw them cruise to victory. The decision to put MTTSC into bat was based on the recent run of poor scores by the home team. But in spite of losing an early wicket MTSSC batsman Manpreet Sidhu and Yogi Raithatha were in no mood to throw away their wickets. They put on a 80 run partnership before Yogi departed for a well made 58. Then Birkbeck tried to come back into the game with 2 quick wickets. But MTSSC’s elegant lefthander Vijith Vignarajah steadied the ship with a run a ball 40 with Sidhu accumulating runs all the time. Finally Sidhu reached his 100 thus helping MTSSC reach 244 of the allotted 55 Overs
But given that Birkbeck had scored 240 plus in each of their last 2 games it was not going to be an easy game.Following tea, MTSSC started off proceedings with Naveed Ali and Kalaharan Manoharan. With a bit of a drizzle in the air Birkbeck started the game with the intention of finishing it before the promised showers arrived later in the evening. Opener A Hussain tore into the MTSSC bowling taking a liking to Naveed Ali’s pace in particular. And Birkbeck sped along to 72 runs in 12 Overs making the total of 244 look much smaller. Lavan Krishnamohan replaced Naveed Ali and the Skipper Kalaharan had Opener K Maan out LBW but it was an excellent piece of fielding by centurion Sidhu that caught Hussain well short of his crease to give MTSSC a crucial breakthrough. Then Lavan and Naveed who was brought back into the attack ran riot with 3 wickets a piece and Skipper Kalaharan chipped in with 2 wickets. However the last wicket pair of Birkbeck put up a fight and with only 2 Overs to go and the drizzle becoming heavier it was left to Vice Captain Yogi to finish the game with a googly that went through the Birkbeck No 10’s gate cue wild celebrations. MTSSC next face league leaders Osterley which is always a tense game and look to continue their climb up the table.
